Risk factors in implants
Excess low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (dyslipidemia) is responsible for a slower bone metabolism or lower dental implant osseointegration. In addition, vitamin D is a key factor for linking innate and adaptive immunity. Both of these factors are compromised under the conditions of vitamin D deficiency. Disgusting Toothbrush
Your toothbrush looks innocent enough sitting on your bathroom sink. But before you put it in your mouth, consider this: the average toothbrush can contain 10 million bacteria or more—including E. coli and Staph, according to a study at the University of Manchester in England.
Putting family toothbrushes together in one container, the bacteria can spread from one to the other if the heads are touching. That’s an especially bad idea if one person is sick.
Along the same lines, it’s possible for germs to be transmitted from one brush to another by sharing toothpaste. MORE HERE

‘Oil pulling’: Legit or another alternative medicine fad?
“I would say there are not enough research and proper clinical trials in this regard,” wrote Sharath Asokan, BDS, MDS, PhD, a professor at the department of pediatric dentistry at Meenakshi Ammal Dental College in Chennai, India, in an email to DrBicuspid.com. “Within limited available literature and as a person working in this area for close to a decade, I am convinced this works.”
For now, the ADA has no opinion on the matter and responded to interview requests by saying that it cannot comment on oil pulling because additional research is needed..Oil pulling “is as good as chlorhexidine for a routine preventive practice,” Dr. Asokan said.
Thai researchers from the Faculty of Dentistry at Mahidol University in Bangkok employed coconut oil, corn oil, rice bran oil, palm oil, sesame oil, sunflower oil, and soy bean oil (Asia Journal of Public Health, May-August 2011, Vol. 2:2, pp. 62-66). They found that “coconut oil exhibited antimicrobial activity against S. mutans and [Candida] albicans,” they wrote. “Sesame oil had antibacterial activity against S. mutans whereas sunflower oil had antifungal activity against C. albicans. However, [Lactobacillus] casei was found to be resistant to all tested oils.” Their study provided enough data for the researchers to conclude that “oil-pulling therapy with some edible oils could be used as a preventive home therapy to maintain oral hygiene, especially in developing countries.” NEWSLINK

Insanity of Dental meetings & Tradeshows
There is no denying that overall meeting attendance, and especially exhibit floor attendance and participation, has decreased over the last two decades. There is no more lining up the morning of the first day of the show to rush in to see the new products and get the show specials, because dentists and staff can have almost any product brought to their office and demonstrated any time they want — without going to a show. All large equipment is available for demonstration at local showrooms or manufacturers will fly you to their factory for a tour and demonstration.
The definition of insanity is that you keep on doing the same thing over and expect a different outcome. If we continue to do what we have been doing for decades, both show organizers and show exhibitors will continue to be dissatisfied. FULL ARTICLE

Dental test can give near precise birth date: expert
Estimation of age based on stage of development of teeth can give a near accurate date of birth of a child, said Dr.J.Jayaraman, research, paediatric dentistry, University of Hong Kong.
In male children it could be as close as 1.5 weeks and in female children it could be as close as 2.6 weeks, he said. Dr Jayaraman was participating in a continuing dental education programme at Sri Ramachandra University in Chennai.
He said such dental tests are widely practiced in UK and is legally accepted.  In India, however, we need more evidence based research.  There is also need for the development of reference data and its validation because of varied and diversified nature of Indian population with multi racial features.  The dental test mode of determining the age of a child is a boon to orphan children who face several problems due to lack of birth certificate.
