Tongue is a mirror of oral hygiene
Aikta Singh, consultant dentist at Gurgaon’s Columbia Asia Hospital, says if brushing the teeth is important, cleaning the tongue is equally essential.
“First, wash a tongue-cleaner and then place it on the tongue. Don’t apply too much pressure and clean in a downward motion at least two to three times. If the pressure is too much you may hurt your tongue,” said Aikta Singh.
Clean the tongue on a regular basis to prevent bacteria from growing, she added.

New Products and Growing Clinical Support will Drive Rapid Growth in Brazil, Russia, India, and China for Dental Biomaterials
The BRIC markets for dental biomaterials are largely dominated by international competitors with strong positions in other regions.
However, the introduction of new products supported by clinical data through 2022 will offer the potential for rapid market growth as physicians increasingly recognize the benefits of these products and recommend them to patients. In addition to greater accessibility in physician practices, increasing economic prosperity will enable more patients to seek out traditionally expensive dental biomaterial procedures. NEWSLINK

Re Gen Endodontics gets $2 million funding
A new study will evaluate the effectiveness of two regenerative approaches for the treatment of immature permanent teeth with pulpal necrosis in pediatric patients compared with the conventional mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) apexification. The trial, which will be carried out by three scientific institutions in the U.S. has recently been awarded a grant of $1.7 million by the American Association of Endodontists Foundation.
The clinical trial will evaluate standard apexification treatment, which involves the placement of MTA, an FDA-approved dental material, at the end of an immature root followed by a composite restoration. The treatment will be compared to a novel regenerative endodontic procedure using tissue engineering principles (REGENDO), in which commercially available growth factors that may induce the growth of dentine and pulp are placed into the root canal. This Dental Implant can Fight Infection, Improve Healing and Last a Lifetime
“Dental implants can greatly improve the lives of people who need them,” said Tolou Shokuhfar (pic below) , an assistant professor of mechanical engineering. “But there are two main issues that concern dentists: infection and separation from the bone.”
The mouth is a dirty place, so bacterial infections are a risk after implant surgery, and sometimes bone fails to heal securely around the device. Because jawbones are somewhat thin and delicate, replacing a failed implant can be difficult, not to mention expensive. Generally, dentists charge between $2,000 and $4,000 to install a single implant, and the procedure is rarely covered by insurance.

Colgate trains its guns at GSK to fight over 6000 crore
A mother takes her daughter to the dentist, clutching an apple in her hands. The apple, half-eaten, has blood stains on it, which the dentist says is because of bleeding gums.
One in every three Indians suffer from gum problems. But few consult a dentist, let alone use a product for it. Colgate is targeting these people. But it isn’t the only. GlaxoSmithKline Consumer’s Parodontax also targets the same problem.
After sparring with Hindustan Unilever and Procter & Gamble, Colgate is now training its guns at GSK Consumer. The two have been in battle before for a share of the sensitivity toothpaste segment, nine per cent of the overall Rs 6,000-crore-a-year toothpaste market. MORE HERE

Genetic techniques have role in future of dental care
A visit to the dentist could one day require a detailed look at how genes in a patient’s body are being switched on or off, as well as examining their pearly whites, according to researchers. “In the case of oral health, epigenetic factors may help to orchestrate healthy and unhealthy states in our mouths. They respond to the current local environment, such as the type and level of our oral microbes, regulating which of our genes are active. This means we could use them to determine an individual’s state of health, or even influence how their genes behave. We can’t change the underlying genetic code, but we may be able to change when genes are switched on and off,” a co-author says.  SCI NEWS

Agonising Toothache that has nothing to do with teeth
It took 2½ years – and an astonishing four sessions of needless root canal treatment on different teeth – before Alison was given the correct diagnosis.
Not only is trigeminal neuralgia often slow to be picked up, it’s thought to be one of the most painful conditions known to medicine. It’s even been called the ‘suicide disease’, because patients can begin to feel suicidal, so debilitating are the symptoms.
Many sufferers describe the pain as like an electric shock, but for Alison it felt ‘like a knife stabbing into my jaw’. MORE ON DAILY MAIL
