Dental implant ends up in woman’s sinus
A 57-year-old woman in Italy who went to the doctor with inflamed sinuses and facial pain had an unusual diagnosis: a dental implant in the sinus.
The woman had undergone oral surgery about two years before to place an implant — a 2-centimeter long (0.79 inch) metal screw designed to hold in place a replacement for a missing tooth — in her upper jaw. But surprisingly, an inspection of her mouth revealed the implant was not there. Instead, the gums covering the area of her missing tooth were healed, and her remaining teeth were healthy. MORE HERE

Oral Bacteria Create a ‘Fingerprint’ in Your Mouth
The bacteria in the human mouth — particularly those nestled under the gums — are as powerful as a fingerprint at identifying a person’s ethnicity, new research shows.
Scientists identified a total of almost 400 different species of microbes in the mouths of 100 study participants belonging to four ethnic affiliations: non-Hispanic blacks, whites, Chinese and Latinos.
Only 2 percent of bacterial species were present in all individuals — but in different concentrations according to ethnicity — and 8 percent were detected in 90 percent of the participants. Beyond that, researchers found that each ethnic group in the study was represented by a “signature” of shared microbial communities. MORE HERE

To Err is human- How it impacts implant placement ?
Human error is inevitable. No amount of experience or lack of it can change this fact.
A US study from 2012 has suggested that errors are more likely to occur when clinicians have less than five years of clinical experience. How relevant are operative procedural errors compared with other errors?
There are actually a number of studies on error, and experience should definitely be considered a component.
The reality is that errors can occur at any phase of implant placement. They vary in degree of severity and effect on long-term survival....MORE HERE

Bangalore- Dentist, anaesthetist suspended for boy’s death
BANGALORE: The Karnataka Medical Council (KMC) has suspended two doctors who allegedly treated three-year-old Shirish Lokesh who died from an overdose of anaesthesia while undergoing a dental procedure in HSR Layout in February this year.
The action comes just days after the Supreme Court sent a strong message to the medical fraternity through a landmark judgment in a medical negligence case.
A case of medical negligence was taken up by KMC against the dentist, Dr Raviraj GA, and anaesthetist Dr Raghavendra.
Shirish’s father, Lokesh KS, however, said he is not happy with the verdict. “I am not satisfied with the judgment. One-year suspension is too less a punishment. The doctor can just treat it as a holiday or go to some other state and practice…..MORE HERE

Quality of Dental work suffers due to optical illusion
Professor Robert O’Shea, an Australian visual perception expert, came to this surprising conclusion after teaming up with dentistry researchers from New Zealand. He asked them to prepare 21 teeth for root canals by drilling cavities in each. But after taking a look at their work, O’Shea discovered that all of the dentists drilled larger holes than necessary. The Farce of Biometrics...Was any part timer caught with this system ?
Biometrics was introduced in 2009. In RTI reply dated Oct 23 2010 from DCI signed by S.S. Arora suggesting that it was activated in all colleges (255). A subsequent RTI reply dated 18th May 2011 signed S.S. Kanyal says it has not been installed in 21 colleges which include colleges in which DCI members are staff. Even more comically it says that it is ‘installed and not connected to server’ (meaning dysfunctional) in 104 colleges. Notice the dichotomy in answers by two different PIO’s. This information means it is either not installed or is not working in 50% of the colleges 2 years after they began installing it at a cost of Rs 1, 65, 75,000/ (also received by RTI). From the date of installation date till September 2011 it has not identified a single person who was going part time. It will be laughable to imagine that during this period of time all the colleges had full time staff, each of whom were religiously attending college 240 days for 8 hours each day!! The biometrics was a farce AND now AGAIN ? Credits…Dr George Paul
