A day after the results, a third-year BDS student committed suicide by consuming poison on Wednesday. Shweta Bhoyar, 21, a resident of Bank Colony, Ashirwad Nagar, took the extreme step because she had failed in the exam.
“She was pursuing studies at a Wardha college. Her third year result was declared on Tuesday and she failed. Her parents said she was shocked and disturbed after the poor results,” said the investigating officer from Sakkardara police station.MORE HERE
Health minister Azad announces national healthcare institute at PGI
Union health minister Ghulam Nabi Azad on Saturday announced to start the National Institute of Healthcare Engineering and Architecture (NIHEA) at the Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER)Chandigarh.
At the conclusion of the institute’s golden jubilee celebrations, where Vice-President Hamid Ansari was the chief guest. The health minister said the NIHEA would be the first institute of its kind in South Asia and offer two master degrees with help from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). MORE HERE

DCI announces superspeciality course at par with MCh in medicine
For the first time in its history, the Dental Council of India (DCI) has decided to introduce a super-specialty branch in the field of dental medicine, along the lines of Medical Council of India. Prez saidd “Next week, we will approach the health ministry with a detailed proposal seeking permission to start a super-specialty branch in oral and maxillofacial surgery. Once we get the permission, with the help of experts, we will design the course and criteria for the admission.” MORE HERE
DCI warns pvt colleges against irregularities in MDS admission
-(see dci website 25 June) It is presumed that the MDS Course Regulations 2007 and guidance prescribed by Respective State Govt. or the State Admission Committee must be followed, and in case any admissions are made in violation of this time schedule or if any excess admission is made beyond the sanctioned intake capacity as well as in violation of the provisions of the Dentists Act and the MDS Course Regulations 2007 made thereunder, such admission would be treated as irregular/illegal and necessary action would be initiated against the erring Dental College.

Maharashtra govt steps in to curb pvt college admission menace
The state government has decided to take control of vacant medical college seats after two rounds of admissions. The move comes in the wake of malpractices by private medical colleges last year. The state has asked private medical and dental colleges to surrender their unfilled seats after the second round; admissions to these seats will then be done on the basis of merit scores in NEET, the central entrance test. Nasal Spray- boon for dentists ?
The spray, “Kovacaine Mist”, was as effective as standard anaesthetics in four out of five patients,
according to researchers at the University of Buffalo in the US. It has passed phase two clinical trials in the US, reports said.
Safety trials with the US Food and Drugs Administration could be complete by the end of the summer and final product approval in the US could be achieved by next year, according to the manufacturer, St Renatus LLC. LINK

Drinking milk after breakfast stops pH drop in mouth

Now, U.S. researchers have found that certain combinations of foods and beverages affect dental plaque acidity. Fast-dissolving, toothache-relieving particles
Researchers in London have received the materials science Venture Prize for developing a new degradable particle which could bring relief to people with toothache.
The particles are special glasses that can be incorporated into toothpaste and dissolve in the mouth, releasing calcium and phosphate that form tooth mineral. This reduces tooth pain, cuts back on the incidences of tooth decay and repairs teeth. MORE HERE

Dietary supplements and dentistry: Reason for caution
July 3, 2013 — Taking dietary supplements has become commonplace in this day and age. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) reported in 2007 that one-third of all Americans take them — to the tune of nearly $27 billion a year. But how important is it for dentists to be aware of what dietary supplements their patients are taking?
A recent Journal of the American Dental Association report emphasizes that there are several common supplements that dentists should be informed of due to the potential for adverse interactions (July 2013, Vol. 144:7, pp. 788-795).
