A reduction in the number of undergraduate dental student places at UK institutions was proposed in two reports.Dr Judith Husband, Chair of the BDA’s Ethics, Education and the Dental Team Working Group, said: ‘The conclusions of HEE and CfWI must be carefully considered and pragmatic, sensible decisions taken about any changes to student numbers’. Obesity increases odds for perio treatment
Body mass index (BMI) and obesity appear to be independent predictors of poor response following nonsurgical periodontal therapy,” wrote the study authors from Eastman Dental Institute in London, Plymouth University in the U.K., and the European Research Group on Periodontology in Italy.
The relevance of their conclusion is increased by the findings of a meta-analysis that found that obese patients are 2.3 times more likely to have periodontitis than a control group of a healthy weight, independent of traditional risk factors (Obesity Reviews, May 2011, Vol. 12:5, pp. e381-e404). Link found between perio disease and oral cancer
The oral-systemic link has become increasingly important as researchers have connected periodontal disease with conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, and pregnancy complications, and now a new study (Head & Face Medicine, December 9, 2013) has found a possible association between periodontal disease and oral cancer.
Monitoring and treatment of chronic periodontitis may be beneficial in reducing a potential cause of oral squamous cell carcinoma, according to the study authors. MORE HERE
