Six dental clinics in the state face action
These clinics are involving in canvassing, putting up huge sign boards along roads and publicising through press reports to lure patients.
According to A Manikyam, registrar of Andhra Pradesh State Dental Council (APSDC), a statutory body, the six dental clinics facing action are Partha Dental Care and all its branches, Vasan Dental Care and its branches, Star Dental Experts which has branches at Eluru and Amalapuram, Denty’s Superspeciality Hospital and its branches, Apollo Dental Spa and its branches and Dr Bandlamudi Basaveswara Rao Dental Clinic, Vijayawada. Speaking to Express, the registrar says that every dental practitioner or clinic has to enrol with the respective state dental council before starting the practice as per the guidelines of the Dental Council of India. During the last three years and current year, two cases of seeking admission in MBBS course, under 15% All India Quota for the year 2010-11, on production of fake caste certificates in medical college in Jaipur, Rajasthan and Ahmadabad, Gujarat have come to the notice of the Government.

Healthy gums key to preventing illnesses
Periodontitis, a serious gum infection that can weaken teeth and jaw bones can also adversely affect diabetes control and could raise the risk of premature birth in some women, warns the British Society of Periodontology (BSP).
The vast amount of bacteria under the gums can pass in the bloodstream to other parts of the body. The BSP recommends brushing gums and teeth up to three times a day and using mini-interdental brushes or floss daily. NEWSLINK

Anticariogenic agents of the future may come from nature
A study published recently in Archives of Pharmacal Research (March 12, 2013) reported antibacterial activity of Albizia myriophylla extracts against Streptococcus mutans and clinical isolates. In this study, samples of the wood were collected from south Thailand and extracted for several suspected anticariogenic agents. Of several compound isolates, the most active against cavity-causing bacteria was found to be lupinifolin. Considering its strong activity against S. mutans, further research is anticipated to determine its potential in product applications. FULL REPORT
