Indian dentist named dean of US dental school
An internationally regarded researcher and highly honored dental educator, Rena N. D’Souza, D.D.S., M.S., Ph.D., has been selected as the first permanent dean of the University of Utah’ new School of Dentistry. She assumes her new role on Aug. 1, 2013.
She said “I am grateful for the experiences I gained as a graduate dentist of the University of Bombay and also those at the University of Texas in Houston where I spent 23 years developing my skills as a dental academician.” . FULL NEWS

PIL seeks fair admission to dental colleges
Chennai: A public interest litigation (PIL) has been filed in the Madras high court to direct the private dental colleges to ensure and conduct admission of students to the postgraduation courses strictly as per the laws and regulations based on the merit-based rank list.
A division bench, comprising justices K.K. Sasi­dharan and R. Karuppiah, before whom the PIL filed by Indian Dental Association by its state legal cell co-convener, Dr (ex-Major) V. Murali came up for hearing, ordered notice to the state government, Dr M.G.R. Medical University, DME, Dental Council of India (DCI) and 14 private dental colleges in the state and posted to June 3 further hearing of the case. MORE HERE

Dangerous double-jaw surgery on the rise in South Korea
A painful plastic surgery usually only performed for medical reasons is being embraced by South Koreans as the latest way to improve their appearance.
Double-jaw surgery is a radical solution to correct facial deformities and is usually carried out on people who are unable to chew properly due to an excessive over or underbite.
The bone-cutting procedure, that involves realigning the upper and lower jaws, takes months to recover from and carries various risks including permanent facial numbness or even paralysis. MORE HERE

Actor Michael Douglas has denied saying in interview his throat cancer was caused by oral sex, claiming instead he was discussing the causes of cancer.

Billions Worldwide Suffer from Major Tooth Decay
Billions (3.9bn) of people across the globe are suffering from major untreated dental problems, according to a new report led by Professor Wagner Marcenes of Queen Mary, University of London, published in the Journal of Dental Research.
Professor Marcenes of the Institute of Dentistry at Queen Mary led an international research team investigating oral health as part of the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2010 study.

Seven MILLION Britons don’t brush their teeth
Seven million Britons do not clean their teeth regularly, a new survey has revealed.
One in seven admitted to leaving it two whole days before they picked up a toothbrush and 21 per cent also said they forget to floss.
The study also revealed that 25 per cent of people spread germs by forgetting to cover their mouth when coughing and by forgetting to wash their hands after going to the toilet. MORE
