Chief secretary to probe pvt college admissions
The chief secretary will conduct a probe into the alleged fraudulent practices while granting admissions to private medical and dental colleges, state medical education minister Dr Vijay Kumar Gavit said on Wednesday.
While replying to a calling-attention motion raised by senior Bharatiya Janata Party legislator Devendra Fadnavis, Gavit said that the state plans to set up a new regulatory mechanism to curb malpractices during admissions. LINK
Herbal lollipops fight perio disease
Researchers from the U.S. have found new evidence that glycyrrhizol A from the Chinese herb Glycyrrhiza uralensis, more commonly known as licorice root, in lollipops improves oral health. In a recent study, they found that the herbal compound reduced the activity of the main agents of periodontal disease and tooth decay.
In the in vitro study, researchers from the University of Iowa inoculated agar plates with a number of pathogens, including agents associated with periodontal disease, such as Porphyromonas gingivalis, Prevotella intermedia, Tannerella forsythia and Streptococcus mutans, which causes dental caries. Minster abuses dental students
Two dental college students released a video to news channels on Tuesday claiming that medical education minister Dr Vijaykumar Gavit abused them when they went to seek his help for continuing their course after their college lost its affiliation.
Akshay Trimukhe and Sarang Waghmare, from Jamnlal Goenka Dental College, Akola, said when one of them started recording the minister’s behaviour on his mobile phone, his bodyguard intervened and allegedly hit them. LINK
Sexual abuse of student by prof, HC pulls up MCI
Justice Ramana asked what the responsibility of the MCI was when such allegations were made by girl students against the professors of a college. He asked whether the MCI had any responsibility to regulate affairs of medical colleges, including the conduct of professors.
Justice Ramana directed the Registry to implead the MCI as one of the party to the petition.
Referring to the allegations of the student that the police did not take any action against the professor despite her complaint, the Bench sought a reply from counsel for the home department. MORE
Nobel Biocare to settle multimillion dollar implant lawsuit with dentist
Nobel Biocare will reportedly pay up to $1.3 million to settle a $450 million lawsuit brought against it three years ago by a California dentist who said the company had misrepresented the safety of its NobelDirect implants.
The lawsuit, which was filed in June 2010 by Jason Yamada, DDS, of Torrance, CA, in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, sought compensation for dentists who had to perform surgery on their patients or pay for restorative surgery due to complications from the implants. Indian dental business receives large-scale investment
Indian private equity firm Asian Healthcare Fund (AHF) has confirmed that it will be investing significantly in one of the country’s largest dental chains. According to CEO Ajay Kumar Vij, his company intends to pump INR400 million (US$7 million) into Western Indian-based Total Dental Care, which runs dental clinics in Mumbai and Pune under the mydentist brand.
