Best combination of analgesics for dental pain
For mild pain, the guidelines call for clinicians to prescribe 200 to 400 mg ibuprofen to be taken every 4 to 6 hours as needed. For mild to moderate pain, the guidelines call for 400 to 600 mg ibuprofen every 6 hours for 24 hours, followed by 400 mg ibuprofen every 4 to 6 hours as needed. For moderate to severe pain, the guidelines call for 400 to 600 mg ibuprofen with 500 mg acetaminophen every 6 hours for 24 hours, and then 400 mg ibuprofen with 500 mg acetaminophen every 6 hours as needed. Finally, for severe pain, the guidelines call for 400 to 600 mg ibuprofen with 650 mg acetaminophen and 10 mg hydrocodone every 6 hours for 24 to 48 hours, followed by 400 to 600 mg ibuprofen with 500 mg acetaminophen every 6 hours as needed. College denies admission to selected students
Bangalore- A number of students, who were allotted dental seats in a city college, approached the Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA) on Wednesday alleging that the college denied them admission, terming their Common Entrance Test (CET) vacancy round seats as invalid.
According to the students, the college handed a letter to them when they went to report, quoting a Supreme Court judgement, and told students that “the present allotment is a clear violation of the directions of the Supreme Court that the last date for admissions is July 31.” NEWSLINK

A woman in Cai Lay District, in southern Tien Giang province, is offering treatment for a decayed tooth that uses cooking oil and an unidentified substance. In fact, it is a trick of a quack.
The woman is Tran Thi Dom, who has set up a “consulting room” in the kitchen in her house in the district’s Tan Hoi Commune to treat decayed teeth by “capturing and killing tooth worms using a therapy that has been handed down from generation to generation.” MORE HERE

Dentists with HIV to be allowed to operate on patients
NHS staff infected with the Aids virus will be allowed to carry out operations and other invasive procedures for the first time.
A ban which has been in place for more than 20 years is to be lifted by the Government, which says it will not put patient safety at risk.
The ban was imposed because of fears that if an Aids-infected surgeon or dentist cut themselves during certain types of operation, it could result in the patient becoming infected. MORE HERE

Oral bacterium can trigger colorectal cancer
Researchers from Case Western Reserve University School of Dental Medicine have discovered how a common oral bacterium can contribute to colorectal cancer, a finding that opens promising new research avenues for the development of approaches to prevent and treat the disease.
“We found this cancer is linked to an infection from [the bacterium],” said Yiping Han, professor of periodontics at the dental school and the study’s lead investigator. “This discovery creates the potential for new diagnostic tools and therapies to treat and prevent the cancer.” MORE HERE
