GRONINGEN, Netherlands: Scientists from the University of Groningen have created a new type of 3-D printing polymer able to kill 99 per cent of harmful oral bacteria upon contact. Results so far are promising for a multitude of future applications.
In the development process, the researchers embedded antimicrobial quaternary ammonium salts in existing dental resin polymers that are used for prostheses. The positively charged salts disrupt negatively charged bacterial membranes, causing them to rupture and die, the researchers explained. The new polymer was then put into a 3-D printer, hardened with ultraviolet light and used to print out a range of dental objects, including prosthetic teeth and orthodontic braces.…NEWSLINK
