Can overseas citizens take CET, HC directs Govt.
The Bombay high court on Wednesday directed the state government to decide within four weeks whether or not Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) should be permitted to appear for the MH-CET, an entrance exam for medical courses.
The petition said Rule 4(1) concerning eligibility criteria in the MH-CET brochure was discriminatory as it barred Persons of Indian Origin, OCI and Non-Resident Indians from appearing for the entrance exam.
It contended that Kerala and Andhra Pradesh had done away with such discriminatory curbs in their CETs. NEWSLINK

Oregon and Idaho need more dentists. That’s according to a new study out Tuesday from the Pew Charitable Trusts. It puts Oregon and Idaho among the top 10 states with the worst shortages.

Manufacturers have found an ingenious way to supply their clientele tobacco and paan masala (both not banned when sold individually) in separate sachets, which, when combined gives the same mixture as gutka.
Sachets of such paan masala without any tobacco and nicotine along with sachets of zarda are gradually flowing into shops all over the City. “It is in such a complementary form that gutka and paan masala are now being supplied separately to shops and demand is also high,” said a supplier. Popular painkiller banned
Under the Drugs and Cosmetic Rule 30-B, the import and marketing of any drug the use of which is prohibited in the country of origin, is banned in India. A parliamentary panel report on health earlier this year had rapped the government for delay on withdrawing deanxit and analgin, which are not sold in markets globally.
While the ministry has been dilly-dallying on withdrawing analgin and deanxit for years now, despite pressure from a parliamentary panel, the decision on the diabetes drug pioglitazone has taken the industry completely by surprise. MORE HERE

Helpless MCI to seek CBI & state police help
The MCI  had received several complaints from “well-wishers, individuals and concerned citizens” about “poor infrastructure, fake faculty members and cheating/duping of the students by the management of private medical colleges etc,” it said.
The MCI has also conceded that it lacks a proper system to monitor the violations of norms and standards by these colleges and sought the help of the state-level police agencies to curb such activities. NEWSLINK

Nasal spray anesthetic: The end of the needle?
June 25, 2013 — Patient fear of the needle is a regular obstacle for dental professionals. Now St. Renatus, a Colorado start-up, is navigating the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval process to bring an anesthetic in the form of a nasal mist to the market.
The nasal spray, called Kovacaine Mist, is designed to anesthetize the maxillary arch. While the absence of a needle is an important aspect of the technology, it could provide other advantages to a dental practice as well, according to the company. MORE HERE

Perio and kidney disease link
Now researchers say preliminary studies suggest a connection between gum infections and kidney disease as well.
“If we at least start to show that treating periodontal disease can slow the progression of kidney disease, the long-term ramifications for dental policy and how we manage patients with chronic kidney disease are huge,” said Grubbs, who is also a nephrologist, or kidney expert, based at San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center.
